Communications Fellow
We are seeking a full time one-year Communications Fellow with a background in journalism, media, communications or related field to help NESRI reach a wider range of social movement actors regarding the use of human rights in advancing social justice goals in the United States. Join us and help us reach our goals!
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Create Web 2.0 strategies to reach the social justice community to share human rights tools and strategies.
- Upgrade and enhance NESRI’s website and web-based work.
- Implement and test approaches such as an interactive library of tools, a more developed blog, a listing of human rights organizations in the United States working on economic and social justice issues, and tools on website to allow for transparent responses and dialogue about economic and social rights in the United States.
- Develop print materials shaped for targeted constituencies to introduce them to each of our priority projects areas.
- Collect data about networks of community based organizations, and advocacy networks, in order to better shape our communication products to their needs, and build relationships with these networks to ensure wider distribution of human rights tools.
- Develop accessible public education print materials for targeted constituencies (primarily community-based organizations) in each program area.
- Develop a list of community media and test the efficacy of community media to convey a human rights message to target constituencies.
- Develop a strategy to tailor human rights tools, analysis and other material for existing social justice networks.
- Write, edit and publish web content and track visibility.
- Monitor media coverage of related issues and report on articles and trends of significance to staff.
- Assist Program Directors with press events and pitching stories and Op-Eds to media.
- Maintain and update listserv.
Qualifications:
- A strong commitment to and familiarity with human rights.
- An understanding of U.S. political issues and background in communications preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to quickly and efficiently write and edit.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects and priorities.
- Previous experience with a nonprofit helpful.
- Experience with Dreamweaver, Publisher and InDesign is desirable.
- Experience liaising with the media and obtaining media coverage.
- The ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources and make it dynamic, understandable, and persuasive to specific audiences, helping to give a “voice” to NESRI.

HEALTH PROGRAM INTERNSHIP
College or Graduate Students will assist in research and writing for the Human Right to Health Program. NESRI's Health Program works with health advocates to develop a human rights approach to protecting health and ensuring access to adequate health care for all people in the United States. Human rights offer a framework for promoting health policies rooted in a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of people over profits. The Human Right to Health Program currently focuses on advancing a human rights approach for reforming the systems for financing and delivering health care. The program works with community partners and other health advocates to generate human rights documentation, analysis, advocacy, public education materials, and workshops. The work will be supervised by NESRI's Health Program Director.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have knowledge of and interest in human rights standards and public health policy in the United States.
• Candidates should have experience working/interacting with grassroots organizations and with developing materials for that audience.
• Candidates should have strong research and writing skills.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)
• Experience working with media, developing press contacts, and writing OpEds, news articles, etc. is a plus.

EDUCATION PROGRAM INTERNSHIP
NESRI is seeking interns in New York City and Boston to assist with research and outreach for the Human Right to Education Program. For more information about the Education Program go to >>>.
Intern responsibilities may include: Research and Documentation: Assist with research for the Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC), a national coalition of advocates, organizers and educators working together to end abusive school disciplinary policies and the “pushout” of students. Interns will carry-out interviews with community organizers, lawyers and educators working in local communities to change school disciplinary policies and prepare best practices case studies for the DSC website. (DSC works in collaboration with the Education Subcommittee of the Children’s Rights Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association).
Publications: Assist with writing, editing and formatting for NESRI publications and fact sheets on discipline and safety policies in U.S. public schools. Interns may also assist with media outreach and contacts for publications.
Outreach and communications: Attend meetings in NYC of education advocates and support communication between NESRI and partner organizations.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have knowledge of and interest in human rights standards and public education policy in the United States.
- Candidates should have experience working/interacting with grassroots organizations and with developing materials for that audience.
- Candidates should have strong research and writing skills.

DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP
As a small organization we are in need of qualified interns for fall 2008 to help us in all facets of our work. We are looking for enthusiastic interns to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week.
Internship responsibilities include: social networking, database development, editing and production of materials, mailings, event planning, filing, website updates, listserv management and program support.
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)
- Excellent organization skillsand attention to detail
- Knowledge of and interest in human rights
- Experience with editing, facebook, blogging, website development
- Publication design and layout are a plus
