December, 2008, Northeast USA
In December, members of NESRI’s partner the Coalition of Immokalee Workers along with their allies in the Fair Food Alliance embarked on a 10-day tour through the Northeast.  The tour was aimed at bringing public attention to the exploitation of farmworkers in the Florida's tomato fields. The tour culminated in New York City on December 10th, International Human Rights Day.  There were meetings with local student, faith, labor, and community groups on December 9th and 10th. >>>

NESRI Board Member Paul Farmer moderated a panel to celebrate Health and Human Rights: An International Journal. Panelists included: Philip Alston Director of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, NYU Law School; Agnes Binagwaho, Executive Secretary of Rwanda's National AIDS Control Commission; and Gavin Yamey, Senior Editor at PLoS Medicine. The event took place from 3-5pm at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA, and was free and open to the public.

Whole Foods Market, the world’s leading natural and organic foods supermarket and NESRI partner the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), the Florida-based farm worker organization spearheading the growing Campaign for Fair Food, announced today that the two will work in partnership to help improve wages and working conditions for Florida tomato pickers. According to an agreement signed this week, Whole Foods Market will support the CIW’s “penny-per-pound” approach for tomatoes purchased from Florida, with the goal of passing these additional funds on to the harvesters.  >>>

NESRI Housing Director Tiffany M. Gardner conducted a human rights training for May Day New Orleans, a public housing resident organization founded by Sam Jackson, a member of NESRI's Katrina/Tsunami transnational exchange.  May Day is committed to ensuring that New Orleans officials honor the promised one for one replacement of the recently demolished public housing complexes, as well as ensuring full participation by residents in the city’s rebuilding process.

This is an installment of the New Human Rights Dialogue Series, a collaborative initiative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the NGO Committee on Human Rights, the DPI and Member States, leading up to the commemoration on December 10, 2008 of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The U.S. government recently filed a report to the United Nations on the nation's progress toward the elimination of racial discrimination. The U.N. CERD Committee agreed with some aspects of the report but noted that the United States has failed to recognize and remedy instances where facially-neutral policies contribute to inequality in health and health care. To address these issues, several NGOs and scholars, prepared a "shadow" report, Unequal Health Outcomes in the United States. There was a panel discussion, moderated by Brian Smedley of The Opportunity Agenda, which featured presentations from Steve Hitov of the National Health Law Program and others, and toke place on April 24 from 1:30pm - 3:00pm in room HC-8 of the Capitol.
