Description:

Update: The House Resolution will be heard in the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee this Saturday, February 4th at 1:30 pm. Health Right NM is calling for supporters to take part in the hearing.

On February 1, the Health Care is a Human Right Amendment to New Mexico's Constitution will receive its first committee hearing of this session. Introduced in the form of Senate Joint Resolution 5 (sponsored by Sen. Jerry Ortiz y Pino) and House Joint Resolution 23 (sponsored by Rep. Gail Chasey), the amendment, if passed by both houses, would go directly to voters in November.

Text of the resolution:
"Health care is a fundamental right that is an essential safeguard of human life and dignity, and the state shall ensure that every resident is able to realize this right by establishing a comprehensive system of quality health care that is accessible to each resident on an equitable basis, regardless of ability to pay.”

Health Right New Mexico asks supporters to come and testify at the hearing before the Senate Rules Committee on February 1 at 8:30 am, Room 321, and on February 4 at 1:30 pm. After the hearing, activists plan to visit every legislator to ask them to support these resolutions.
