task force 2009: working for human right in new york city public schools
In March 2006, the Independent Commission on Public Education (ICOPE)and the National Center for Schools and Communities at Fordham University launched “Task Force 2009” to explore how to re-design the NYC public school system based on human rights standards. The Task Force is charged with developing human rights-based legislative and policy recommendations for 2009 when the state law giving the New York City Mayor control of the public school system expires. Cathy Albisa, NESRI’s Executive Director, is a member of the Task Force (see press release). In addition, ICOPE is organizing 5 Independent Borough Education Commissions (IBECs), composed of parents, educators, students and community activists, to interact with the Task Force and serve as community organizers for the project (click here for more info about the IBECs).
