human rights ADVOCACY TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

In partnership with national human rights advocacy groups and Gulf Coast community activists, NESRI disseminates materials and provides training and support on international human rights standards for people displaced by disaster, and on protocols for documentation and monitoring of rights violations. NESRI also supports domestic advocates in efforts to report on human rights violations before international and regional human rights bodies.

NESRI coordinated the Katrina Working Group for the U.S. Coalition of NGO’s (a coalition of over 142 NGO’s) in preparation for the July 2006 U.S. report to the Human Rights Committee regarding U.S. compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.  The working group produced four shadow reports for the committee and was represented in Geneva by several advocates, including four from the Gulf Coast region.
