Complete NYC Special Rapporteur Visit

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited New York City from October 22-24, 2009. The visit included a town hall meeting at James Chapel at Union Theological Seminary; official meetings; and site visits on immigrant housing, homelessness, public housing, and predatory equity in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The City Chair of the NYC visit was Rob Robinson of Picture the Homeless.

 

Complete New Orleans Special Rapporteur Visit

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited New Orleans, LA from October 30-31, 2009. The visit included meetings with local officials; a homelessness site visit; a public housing site visit; a town hall meeting at St. Bernard Community Church; a Section 8 site visit; and a meeting with local advocates. The City Chair of the New Orleans visit was Sam Jackson of Mayday New Orleans.

 

Complete Chicago Special Rapporteur Visit

The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited Chicago, IL from October 27-29, 2009. The visit included a meeting with local advocates at Access Living; a homelessness site visit; a youth homelessness site visit; a town hall meeting at Fernwood United Methodist Church; a tour of Cabrini Green Public Housing Development; a tour of Altgeld Gardens Public Housing Development; and meetings with local officials. The City Chair of the Chicago visit was JR Fleming of the Coalition to Protect Public Housing.

 

Complete Los Angeles Special Rapporteur Visit

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited Los Angeles, California from November 2-4, 2009. The visit included a breakfast with advocates; a site visit on homelessness, foreclosure and Section 8; a town hall meeting at the California Endowment; a site visit on public housing, slum housing and Section 8; meetings with HUD officials; and a tour of skid row. The City Chair of the visit was Becky Dennison of the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA CAN).

 

Complete Pine Ridge Special Rapporteur Visit

The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota on Sunday, November 1, 2009. The visit included a welcoming ceremony and testimonies, a driving tour of Wambli community, meetings with local indigenous councils and advocates, and a town hall meeting.

 

Complete Washinton D.C. Special Rapporteur Visit

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited Washington D.C. from November 5-8, 2009. The visit culminated in the NLCHP's annual National Forum on the Human Right to Housing, held at Georgetown Law Center. Ms. Rolniks' visit to D.C. included meetings with elected officials, a tour of public housing and a town hall meeting, a lunch briefing on housing discrimination, a housing conditions tour, meetings with indigenous groups, and a homeless shelter tour. The National Forum on the Human Right to Housing featured an opening plenary with the City Chairs from each city visit: JR Fleming (Chicago), Sam Jackson (New Orleans), Rob Robinson (New York City), Becky Dennison (LA), Tiffany Gardner and Eric Tars.
