"Last week, for the first time, the United States was reviewed by the United Nations Human Rights Council for its compliance with the entire range of human rights standards adopted by the world community. These include economic and social rights, and the Geneva review was a historic occasion for advocates for economic and social justice. "Stepping out of the elevator onto the 14th floor of the Richard J. Daley Center in Chicago, Sheriee Woodland was greeted by a world-famous panorama of high-rise architecture.

The Chicago Temple Building, Holabird & Root's 23 story, neo-Gothic masterpiece; Kohn Pederson Fox's "Birthday Cake Building" at 311 S. Wacker; and The Legacy, Solomon Cordwell and Buenz's 72-story condominium tower of ocean-blue glass were a few of the many well-maintained buildings that looked back through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

A local poverty-fighting program will begin tonight at the headquarters of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Organizing Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Frank Sindaco, coordinator of the center at 198 S. Main St., said tonight's event at 7 will mainly be an effort to develop relationships with leaders in local religious communities, but the meeting is open to anyone.

"The faith community is a massive part of people's lives so it just seems sensible," Sindaco said as to why tonight's event is mainly focused on the religious community.

"When Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) board members held their meeting on October 19, it was to a packed room – with 150 tenants gathered to demand that the board vote to keep the Lathrop Homes public housing complex available to low–income families.

Led by Miguel Suarez, Cynthia Scott and Robert Davidson, Lathrop residents turned out to the Douglas Field House on Chicago's South Side to demand a "no market rate" claim on 50 percent of the Lathrop units, which are being taken over, renovated and sold as market-rate condos by an opportunistic group of private builders."
