We grieve with the Jewish community after the killings at the Tree of Life * Or L’Simcha Congregation in Pittsburgh, PA.  As in Charleston, hate and violence entered a welcoming place of worship killing primarily elders that anchored a community. The inhumanity and horror of the murders cannot be overstated, and we stand in deep solidarity with the Jewish community.

Once again a grand jury has failed to indict a police officer in the case of the death of an African American.  In this case, Eric Garner was strangled to death in front of witnesses, some who provided video of the accused strangling Mr. Garner in an illegal chokehold.  There is no other explanation for the failure to even take this and other cases of killings of Black men by police officers to trial than a society where the state is above the law, and members of marginalized communities can be killed with impunity.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 - whose anniversary we are commemorating today - is one of the Civil Rights Movement’s signature achievements.  Its promise cannot be overstated: a society free of the toxic and pernicious discrimination that taints all our stated ideals.  But just as the South Africans learned in the years after the end of Apartheid, once the plague of racism has become embedded in a society, it keeps a tenacious hold and finds ways to continue spreading new epidemics.
