NESRI Media Center

An Evening in Honor of Vermont Human Rights Leader Peg Franzen

Printer-friendly version

On Human Rights Day, December 10, NESRI and its partners will celebrate the growing movement for health care as a public good and human right. We invite you to join us and Laura Flanders (of GRITtv) for a dialogue about innovative campaigns to go beyond Obamacare, pioneered in Vermont, Maryland, Maine, and Pennsylvania.

This event will be held in honor of one of the movement’s most inspiring human rights leaders, the late Peg Franzen, former president of the Vermont Workers’ Center, who exemplifies the power of people to effect change. The Healthcare Is a Human Right Campaign made Vermont the first state in the country to pass a law for a universal, publicly financed health care system. This breakthrough, achieved by a people’s movement for human rights, has been a catalyst for similar campaigns across the country. Inspired by Vermont’s human rights organizing model, groups are picking up the baton and paving the way for a domino effect of state-based universal health care wins.

We will be joined at this event, which is co-hosted by the Poverty Initiative, by representatives from the Healthcare Is a Human Right campaigns in Maine, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Vermont, which collectively form the vanguard of a new human rights movement for universal health care.

On Human Rights Day we are re-committing to the principle that human rights begin at home. Join us in honoring Peg Franzen for her leadership in this historic health care breakthrough, and take part in a conversation with all the visionary health care organizers from across the country.
